Work Smart: 7 Ways to Achieve Maximum Productivity in the Mornings

morning

Waking up early every day is not everybody’s forte. In fact, a lot of people find rising early to be an extremely daunting task – something that can only be achieved by people who are already used to it. What these so-called “late-risers” do not keep in mind is the fact that being productive very early in the morning is a great way to get a lot of things done. Jump-starting your day early can boost your momentum throughout the day, enabling you to finish more tasks quickly and having time left to do the things you love.

For the unaware, you can still achieve maximum productivity in the morning if you keep these seven guidelines in mind.

Planning

Getting up early without any game plan in mind is like going to battle without armor or ammunition. The work should start the night before, and that includes scheduling your tasks for the day and listing down the short-term goals that you need to achieve for that day. Make sure that your goals are realistic and that they can be achieved within a given timeframe. That includes making a pretty flexible schedule, allocating time for some overlaps and unexpected circumstances.

You will also find that early planning will help you have a reason to get up early in the morning. It sure is a lot harder to motivate yourself to get up early in the morning without any clarity on your tasks. Lay down your plans the night before – and stick to it – so as to ensure maximum productivity the next day.

Good Sleep

Ever since grade school, people have been taught that getting at least eight hours of sleep every day is essential for overall good health. Tell you what, this truth remains constant throughout the changing times, especially if you want to achieve maximum productivity. Several studies have shown that sleep deprivation can have a lot of negative effects, such as reduction of productivity and shortening of attention span.

Simply Wake Up

This is perhaps the hardest part of achieving maximum productivity in the mornings, since a lot of people have a hard time simply waking up. Common scenario: you set your alarm clock at a specific time every day. However, you also set your snooze button to wake you up every 15 minutes or so. The result? You wake up an hour later than you intended. You just wasted an hour of your precious time oversleeping. You did not get any work done.

To be able to wake up early requires discipline. Ditch the snooze button, or better yet, use an alarm clock that does not have one. If your alarm clock is within arm’s reach, relocate it so that it will be more challenging for you to turn it off than just by simply swinging your arm and silencing it. Put your alarm clock somewhere far from your bed so that it will require you to get up just to turn it off. Or, better yet, just use Clocky. By the time it’s done, you are already wide-awake and ready to start your day.

Breakfast

Eating breakfast is as important as getting enough sleep and rest. Working with an empty stomach distorts your ability to concentrate and focus on the task at hand. Unfortunately, a lot of people tend to skip breakfast even if they know at the back of their minds that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is the fuel that will carry you throughout the day.

Exercise

Exercise is equally essential, as this gets your blood running early in the morning. Even a simple 10-minute walk around your block can already be considered as a form of exercise. Both a healthy diet and an exercise routine can help you not just increase your productivity but also improve your overall health in general. Being productive is also about feeling good about yourself.

Develop a Routine

Having a fixed routine of waking up early every morning helps your body get used to this kind of system. This also means getting to bed at the same time each night. There are some people who are already productive just by getting six hours of sleep every night, while there are also some who need a couple more hours. Understand your body and see what works best for you.

You can also start your morning routine with a ritual, such as praying, yoga or listening to upbeat music – basically, whatever works for you.

Avoid Distractions

Aside from the act of getting up early, distractions are most often the reason why productivity in the morning gets stalled. If you have actual work to get started on, resist the urge to log in to Facebook first or to any other social networking sites. These are huge time wasters and before you know it, you have already wasted an hour or more of your day just by browsing your news feeds. Set your priorities straight, focus on the task at hand. You can always visit Twitter later in the day.

It is always good to get a head start to get more done and feel good.

What say? Does morning work for you to work smart?
